Ahoy Shipmates: I just wanted to inform all former USS Valley Forge LPH-8 shipmates who have not signed up for the Department of Veterans Affairs Environmental Health Registry that you should do so. It is free, believe it or not! I signed up at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. I was scheduled for 1430 hours and was out by 1630 hours. The examination itself is called an Environmental Health Briefing and was administered in several parts. The first part consisted of a questionnaire regarding where and when I served during the Vietnam War and how I was exposed to herbicides (Agent Orange) and my personal family and medical history. I was then escorted to a Veterans Administration doctor who conducted a basic physical examination. I then had labs done, my blood was drawn and a urine test. Everything took about 2-hours to complete. It does not cost anything. Just call your local VA hospital and ask for the Environmental Health Registry Office and request an appointment. The bad news is it took me 4-months to get my appointment. Take care and smooth sailing to all of you! Remember the Happy Valley! Don't Let Your Anchor Rust James R. W. "Jimmy" Cypert
