Daddy, you always knew how much I love you and how much you would be missed when you left. Whether it was on assignment without us or as it is now that you have passed. I have always been proud of you and would have done anything to ease the pain you have suffered these past months. Please rest easy that Mom will be alright. Lane, Lesha, Jim, Dan and I will take as good a care of her as you did for 47 years. Just watch over us and lead us in the right direction as you always have. We are all who we are because of you and the examples you set. We could not have picked a better teacher, father or friend than you. I'll always love you and will make sure Stephanie and Alex remember the man you always were. The best I can do is to raise them the way you and Mom raised me. I have always felt loved and respected and those are the greatest gifts you could have given me. by Sue from Chattanooga, E-mail address: dsf0929@aol.com |

Dad, tomorrow it will be a year since you left. I wanted to come up with something special to say, but all I can think of is how much I miss you and love you. I wish you were here to walk Justine and me down the isle, I wish you were here to watch your grand children grow and see how much they look like you. It's not fair what happened, and how you all were ignored, you know the day of your funeral there was something in the paper about a treatment...a little too late huh? The only other thing I can say is that I will never let your grandchildren forget who you were and what you did!!! I love you so much and miss you more then you would have ever known!!! On Friday, August 20, 1999 at 19:58:37 a tribute was placed here to Honor Sgt. Kenneth D. Kralick B Trp 3rd Sqd 4th CAV 25th Infantry Div 12/16/67
My brother was and still remains my hero. My most vivid memory of him was when he returned from boot camp. I was in Kindergarten and that Friday would be my turn at Show & Tell. I begged him to be my Show and Tell. He said he couldn't because he wanted to see his girl before he shipped out. Seeing how upset I was, he gave me a ribbon off of his uniform and told me all about how he received it. He made me promise not to lose it and return it to him after class. To me this was a huge responsibility. I had my mom pin the ribbon to best "Sunday" dress and off to class I went. That day seemed to drag on forever. Show and Tell was always the last activity of the day. I wouldn't say a word about the ribbon all day to any of my class mates. Finally Show and Tell had begun. I was to be the last to talk to the class. I was sitting in my chair holding the ribbon, when I noticed someone in the doorway in fulld dress uniform. I squealed with delight when I realized the man in the uniform was my brother! I ran to him and jumped in his arms. I whispered in his ear, "I thought you were seeing your girl today". He laughed and replied, "aaah litteone, your the only girl in my life worth seeing today. I just couldn't stand the thought of missing your Show and Tell for anything in the world"! I grabbed his hand and lead him to the front of the room. He patiently stood there and answered all my class mates questions and related funny stories of his experiences in boot camp. When we were finished he helped the kids put on their coats and boots. One boy, who was very poor didn't have any buttons on his coat. My brother got some safety pins from the teacher and fasten the boys coat. He got eye to eye with the boy, reached in his pocket and handed the boy so money. Then he said something in his ear which brought the biggest smile to that young childs face. That was one of the few times I had ever seen that boy smile! I have missed my brother terribly over the years. His smile and kind heart lives in mine heart to this very day. He will forever be my one true Hero! by Kelly Katharin Kralick-Aisquith from Originally Maryland, Currently Utah, E-mail address: KellyKat38@aol.com |

On Wednesday, August 4, 1999 at 21:52:25 a tribute was placed here to Honor Woodrow
I met Woody Fugate last fall when I was looking for WWII veterans who were aboard USS HAMMANN DD-412 at the battle of Midway. Woody answered a letter I had sent to as many HAMMANN veterans as I could find. The first paragraph of his letter is as follows. "I was pleased to receive your letter yesterday and I have read it several times. You made me feel important. I, like you, have been trying to write down a few things so someone, when I am gone will know what went on out there. Today when I enjoy some of the pleasant things of life I think to myself that I enjoy this because of the sacrifice of many who never saw home again." As you can see, my introduction to this incredible man told me how humble he was and that he didn't even know that he was a hero. When HAMMANN was blown in half by a Japanese submarine as she lay alongside USS YORKTOWN CV-5 at Midway, Woody was seriously injured by the underwater explosions. His internal injuries put him in the hospital for eight months. At the time he was a 24 year old Radioman 2class. When I had the privilege of "meeting" him he was 80. We quickly discovered that we liked the same kind of music and the same poetry. Through our correspondence Woody told me about WWII, about Boot Camp, and about the HAMMANN. Each of his letters were a gift that I treasure. As I came to know Woody better, he reminded me more and more of my father who was aboard YORKTOWN at Midway. Both ships were dealt their death blows by the same Japanese submarine. Woody was killed in a car accident in June, 1999. He had been part of my life for eight short months but in that time, he became my friend. I miss him and am so thankful that God put him in my path. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to thank him for being willing to leave his home and family to fight for the freedom we enjoy today. In that first letter he said that he had "been trying to write down a few things so someone, when I am gone will know what went on out there." Well Woody, thanks to you, I know. God Bless you and good-by. by Cathy Munro from Virginia, E-mail address: CMunro1992@aol.com |

On Tuesday, August 3, 1999 at 02:18:41 a tribute was placed here to Honor RONALD KEITH ZANSLER
I will always remember the day that my beloved brother joined the U.S.Navy. It was the proudest moment of his young life. I will never forget his graduation from NTS BootCamp in San Diego. I cried when he tossed his hat in the air and then walked over to my mother, father and me and saluted. This was the same "little brother" who stole my diary from my room when we were teens and shared it all over the neighborhood. He even gave out pages to my boyfriends for a "good read". Ronnie served as a gunner aboard ship in Vietnam. He told us he lobbed the "big ones" in there! As he would speak, you could see the twinkle in his eyes and the sly smile on his face. He had served his country with honor and we loved the man he had become. Ron died unexpectedly on August 21, 1996. IN LOVING MEMORY of my brother who brought so much joy to our family. Most of the Kids were Babys, When their Dads went off to War. It wasn't an unknown situation- It has happened here before. Their Dads didn't ask many questions, Didn't choose the enemy of the fight. But they knew that God would want them. To do the thing thats right. So many of the Fathers, that marched off to Vietnam. Would not come home, to their dear Kids, their Parents or their Moms. And even the worst scenario, And pain was still to bear. The Kids asked, "Where is my Dad?" the Government knew not where. And so these precious Children, decided to learn about Vietnam. They questioned all the Viet Vets, Historians and their Moms. The Children found the Answer, The Country should have learned long ago. When the Country says to fight-you fight. and let your prejudices go. They found out just how hreally brave, Their Daddy's had to be. To stand and fight for freedom, In a time of agony. The Country was split wide open, We should-We shouldn't-We Won't They found in History where their Daddy's fell, and quiety picked up his Ruck. And with their Daddy's heavy pack, Shouldered center and in balance too. They move on through History- for the Country, and me, and YOU. So when I think of Courage, and I respect that most of all, I think of my close, dear Friends, "The Children from the Wall." badger by Danny L. On Sunday, July 4, 1999 at 18:36:02 a tribute was placed here to Honor Elmore Troxler
I want to honor a man I never met but came to know through correspondence. He served during WWII in Fighting Squadron Forty-Two (VF-42) aboard USS YORKTOWN CV-5 as a Second Class Seaman. He never had a chance to advance his rate aboard YORKTOWN because he was there when she was sunk at the Battle of Midway. I had the honor to correspond with him when I started writing the history of my father's WWII service. He and Elmore were in VF-42 together. When I wrote to Elmore for information, he was more than generous in his letters to me. Several years ago he had written his own WWII history for his children that he copied and sent to me. Like most WWII veterans, he didn't talk much about the war. He married his sweetheart, Mary, on May 13, 1945 and was discharged on November 2, 1945. He made a life for himself and his family and never considered that he ever did anything special. But he did. He was a very special man because he was a WWII veteran. Through his courage, honor, and dedication to duty, he left all of us the legacy of FREEDOM. For that he has my deepest respect and eternal gratitude. Elmore passed away on December 22, 1998 and is terribly missed by his wife and children. He is also missed by this friend whom he never met. Thank you Elmore. by Cathy Munro from Virginia, E-mail address: CMunro1992@aol.com |

On Sunday, June 13, 1999 at 14:37:26 a tribute was placed here to Honor The Troops on Hamburger Hill
Orders are Orders It's been thirty years, Since the deed was done; On a hill, In a place, faraway. But the courage of those, Who fought and died- Are still talked about to this, Day. The Army called them Air Assault, They belonged to the 101st, Just what that meant- Would soon be known, From the Pentagon to the- Orient. Blackjack said; "Assault up the face!" But the Platoon Leaders, Weren't so sure; "It's just too damn steep, for the Troopers to keep, Their feet and shoot, as it were." "We think you ought- To bomb the damned thing, till it's dust and nothings alive." To send us up there- with the Enemy and Pigs, don't seem to us any too wise." But the orders were given, And Air Assault driven; To obey each and every one. And to this day, No Sky Troopers say; That Hamburger Hill was fun. For ten long days, And even more Assaults, Airborne cussed, and they died, and they bleed. And on the twelfth Assault- They stood on the top- and they wondered- What was the need? But as they grew older, And their visions grew bolder, And they saw History unfold; It MAY have been wise, to bomb the damned Misers- But they did what the hell they were told. This is the tale, About Hamburger Hill- Some are still around, And some ain't. And they took the damned thing- and won Honor and fame, they would rather have their buddys- back. This litttle Poem, Is 'Bout Hamburger Hill, Air Assault, and I think I should know. If there is ever another- for History to recover- Best call Infantry's 911. They'll fight and they'll cuss- They'll bleed and they'll die- They'll watch History unfold. It's NOT what they'd like- but they have lots of MIGHT, they come from a hard old mold. Now, I'm not as wise- as those Lawyer guys, but just between me and you. They'd do it AGAIN, though their chances were slim, because "Orders are Orders" you know. -badger by Danny L. On Thursday, June 3, 1999 at 22:38:43 a tribute was placed here to Honor Curt & Mary Sears
Dad and Mom, Neither of you were 'active military', but each of you instilled in all of us... me, Jim, Laura, Shannon, Amanda, Kavid and Kristina... a deep, abiding respect and love for the privilege of freedom, the responsiblity of doing everything in our power, with all the passion we all came by naturally from you both, and the rihgt to the PURSUIT of the best this life has to offer, the enjoyment of liberty beyond many world citizens' wildest dreams, and all the happiness we can hold in our hearts, make of our lives and share with others. I was in Wash DC this past Memorial Day... I stood in awe of every expression of memory and honor I was privileged to witness: Rolling Thunder ... 300,000 some Veterans on as many Harleys roared acroos the Memorial Bridge to honor all POW/MIA/KIA ... and those living after they gave their all in Viet Nam. I pray that I never lose sight of the truth of the price paid by all Veterans of all wars, those who have died and those who live on to carry the torch of freedom at such a great price. It is said... "Children grow up loving their parents. Then, they judge them. Sometimes, they forgive them." Thank you for forbearing and shouldering and staying with me on this one... my disillusionment and rage at the ravages of war and the betrayal of all you held dear and I was just beginning to understand.... When I tried to take in.... all from the assassination of JFK.... througout .... Viet Nam.... All the bitterness and rage my heart could hold .... I love you both dearly and truly and will see you at the next pass BEYOND THE SUNSET. Your daughter, Bobbie by Bobbie Victor from Florida, E-mail address: vicven@bv.net |

David, we were all just kids. Kids. Patty and I were still in HS. Herndon Airport. A call. Please keep Patty away from anyone in Military Uniform. She'll ask about David. He's gone. might be (body bag.......aiiiieeeeeeeeee) brought in to Herndon while you all are there. Please do not let her get to anyone there who could hurt her with this news. Let us be the ones to tell her. Your Mom, David, called me to tell me to protect Patty from the pain of your cruel conscription to such an early and horrible death. You are remembered. Dearly and deeply and always. Bobbie by Bobbie Victor from Florida, E-mail address: vicven@bv.net |
