On Sunday, December 5, 1999 at 03:01:13 a tribute was placed here to Honor Sgt. Phillip Edward Parks USMC
Uncle Phil, You never spoke a word of the time you spent in Korea or Viet Nam, but in your eyes it was plan to see. The proud but misty eyes every time you watched Ol' Glory wave and "America" played, when Revile sounded but especially when Taps sounded that final retreat. I never knew of all the honors you had recieved only the Purple Heart you once allowed me pin on your dress greens. A moment that will live on in my memory forever. My husband was a member of your burial detail his Army Class A's an moroon beret really stood out from your follow Marine's and with honor and pride I watched him help you to your final resting place. It was a day I will never forget the sound of Taps and the 21 gun salute still echo in my head and my heart but the hardest thing of all was watching Granny. In the last few years I have gained an undying respect for all who have served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces. Something I had only just began to realize when you left. You helped instill the value of or freedom in all of us as you celebrated each and every Veterens Day. In the strenth and honor you put forth to the very last I am honored to say your are my friend, my mentor, my freedom fighter but must of all my Uncle Phil. On Thursday, November 11, 1999 at 15:43:39 a tribute was placed here to Honor Warren G. Johnson World War II United States Air Force
Like most of your generation, you kept your thoughts and memories of the war deep inside your heart, sharing little only when pressed. Even though you were shot down and taken prisoner by the Germans, God protected you and brought you home for he had a plan for your life. December 6, 1990 brought unbelievable sorrow to your family, but wonderous joy to you as you went home for "breakfast with Jesus." I will share that joy with you one day, but until then, on this Veteran's Day, I thank you and salute all those who guaranteed the freedom of all Americans. Thank you for being a wonderful dad! I love you and miss you! by Sharon Carter from Bristol, Tennessee, E-mail address: sc925@aol.com |

On Thursday, November 11, 1999 at 15:40:37 a tribute was placed here to Honor Fred Prunty/Pennsylvania Rev. Larry Toney/Pennsylvania Bill Riley/Maine and Veterans like them everywhere
Too often, myself included, we only think of the veterans on certain holidays. I cannot even begin to imagine what families with members who are "lost" or "MIA" still go through wondering what ever became of their loved ones. for them these holidays aren't a moment in time, but away of life now. I have had several family members serve in various wars, but we were fortunate and all returned to us. Although some still scarred emotionally of their experience. Still, whenever I look at them or the proud men and women who march by in parades, sit in the pews of my church, or pass by me on the street, I cannot help but think them to be a walking memorial to God and country. They wear their experiences as a coat of honor, every triumph and loss like a medal pinned upon their chect. Like Jesus Christ, they were and still are willing to lay down their lives for people that do not even know them. I count it a priviledge and honor to live in a country that they call home. We can never repay any of them for what they have given, but then they don't ask us to. They walk on in quiet resolve that they have served their God and country and that they have served well and with honor. For them that is enough. For they know true glory... they found it in a country made free by their own hand and sacrifice. May God continue to shine upon them and the hope that they even today continue to instill on generations to come. by Rev. Wanda Lee Christy from Pennsylvania, E-mail address: cindrela@bellatlantic.net |

He was a veteren of five major battles and I am very proud of his dedication to our country. As Native Americans our young men where always willing to fight for their country, it was an honor. Even today in our communitites we honor the veterns in our ceremonies, songs and dancing. When my dad's health was failing I came to realize that we do not support our elder veterns. They are in need of more health care facilities and homes to let them spend their lasts days in dignity.DAD I Love YOU. by kathy froelich from Fort Yates, North Dakota, E-mail address: kathyf@sbci.edu |

On Wednesday, November 10, 1999 at 18:12:31 a tribute was placed here to Honor Jack Dale, T-Sgt. WWII Grandpa, I wrote this while you were still alive, but I don't think you ever got to see it. THE TREASURE BOX I remember my grandpa sitting outside, underneath the shade of the pine tree my dad planted when he was 5. He'd be in one of the dark green and white lawn chairs, holding a bottle of RC cola. Rather than scold me or my brother or sister for screeching after the wild barn cats, he would sit and stare. He looked past the railroad tracks at the back of the property and past the farm which sat on the other side. Not even the barking of Corky and Pepper, the beloved hunting mutts, disturbed grandpa. He just sat and stared. We didn't notice much, we just knew that we could remain acting like wild animals, chasing after wild animals. That was something grandpa just sometimes did. I also remember being at grandma and grandpa's one Sunday morning, still in pajamas, watching an old Western on the ancient RCA television. Grandpa came down the stairs, creak, creak, carrying something he retrieved from the attic. It was an olive green box, metal, covered in many years of dust. Its hinges were rusted adn the push button lock needed no key to open it. Intringued, we scooted over to where grandpa sat on the floor with the green box in front of him. As he opened it, our eyes widened at the treasures we beheld. First, grandpa pulled out two wooden shoes with pointed toes. He tapped them together, making a "cloggin" noise. These were from Holland. WoW! Next, he pulled out a toy of a girl in a nurse's outfit, red cross on her hat. She too was wooden, but if you pushed in the bottom of the pedastal where she stood, her legs would bend and she would dance. Grandpa made her perform to the tune of his whistle. (giggles) She was from England. OOOOO- Peeking into the box, I saw medals and aged letters, but grandpa said, "No, look at this." It was a funny shaped hat, black I think, shaped like a turtle's shell. "This helmet belonged to a German soldier, he was killed, and I kept it." There was a moment of silence, only interupted by a soulful sigh by grandpa. He put the treasures back in the box, closed it and took it back upstairs. The medals, the letters, the helmet, this is when I learned that my grandpa had been in "The War." I never knew I was related to a hero. It was the only time grandpa mentioned it to us. I remember my grandpa sitting out under the shade of the pine tree my dad planted when he was 5. I remember his endless stare. I remember a box, olive green with rusted hinges and a broken lock. It held "treasures." It held grandpa. Andrea Dale (1997) I love you grandpa and thank you for your unknowing gifts. by Andrea Dale from Canton, Ohio, E-mail address: Rowan0104@aol.com |
