On Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at 22:27:09 a tribute was placed here to Honor Lloyd Gene Austin
I was 6 years old when Gene enlisted. My memories of him are mostly of when he would come home on leaves. He loved the Army, he loved serving his country. It was something that he was really good at, and it gave him a great feeling of accomplishment. On his last visit home before returning to Southeast Asia, my Uncle told him that the clock was ticking and not to tempt fate. No one was more aware of that fact than my brother was. And he went back for another tour of duty. It was his life. And his death. He would have not watned others to shed tears for him, or for themselves. As I said, I was so young whe by brother enlisted, that I have scattered memories of him. Mostly my memories are of what his death did to others. Nothing else is ever the same after that. My other brother and my mother have never recovered totally, nor will they. Gene was a son, grandson, brother, cousin and a newphew. But most of all, he was just an American doing his duty as he saw fit. He loved how he had lived and he would have been proud of how he had died. His relationship with my other brother was a great gift from God to both of them. He served his country and his family with honor. We could never had expected anything more. 2-12-43 8-16-69 by Daniel G. Hansen from Irving, Texas, E-mail address: dgh55@aol.com |

On Sunday, March 4, 2001 at 01:22:17 a tribute was placed here to Honor O. M.
My Grandfather would not talk about the war. He always told me that he fought in it so that I did not have to experience the things that he did. He was a kind and generous man who could always make me laugh. He spent the years after the war teaching the gospel in any church that needed a interim pastor and he spent every Sunday morning in the local nursing home ministering to the patients. He had a beautiful singing voice and was always singing some gospel song. My favorite song to hear him sing was "In the Garden" He was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1993. He has been gone from this Earth since June, 1995, but he will always be my hero. I love you Papa. Alicia by Alicia Saunders-Smith from Boyd Texas, E-mail address: Alicia0044@aol.com |

I WAITED & WAITED February 14, 1968 ================= How little I knew what was in store that day I waited and waited, You did not show. The depths of despair were haunting though. The buses had come and the buses had left, But I waited and waited, I did not know. The bugler sounded a distant cry, In formation the planes flew by, The crack of rifles split the air. I waited and waited, You were not there. How could I know you were laid to rest this day. But I waited and waited, Five thousand miles away. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you With All my Love Lil by Lil Abrams from TorontoCanada, E-mail address: lilystoy@idirect.com Website: My Home Page |

To my Dad, I wait for the day for us to be reunited through God.... in your gentle, loving, kind and quiet days as a father - you never told of your heroic acts as a Paratrouper and Pathfinder in World War II, you never told of the pain of living with the memories of World War II, you never discussed the sacrifice of giving up your youth in service to your country.... you showed compassion, kindness and gentleness and hid the toughness - the greatness of your contribution to America. Only after your death in 1990 did I read your letters from World War II and find the hidden hero - I always knew you were my hero.... I hope that in my great love for you.... You, knew that you were my hero..... Until we see each other face to face again. Thank you for coming home from Hell and adopting me. In Loving Memory May the winds of love blow softly, And whisper so you can hear, I will always love and miss you And wish that you were here. This month comes with sad regret That brings a day I can't forget. You went away without good bye But my memories of you will never die. Not a day that I forget you, In my heart you are always here, For I still love and miss you, As it ends the thirty-third year. On Sunday, January 28, 2001 at 18:02:23 a tribute was placed here to Honor Floyd Pickrell WW11 US Navy Photographer
Even though I only had honor to speak with Floyd two times, he is one of my heros. Floyd was a Photographer in the US Navy serving on Bougainville during WW11. My father was an ACOM in the Gun Camera Processing Unit where they became good friends. Thanks to Floyd, our family has many photos of Dad during the time they were serving together on Bougainville. Those photos are treasures that have given us a glimpse into what life was like on the island during the war and even more important, they have given us a glimpse into our father's life as a sailor during WWII. Thank you Floyd. What you have given our family is a gift beyond measure. by Cathy Munro from Virginia, E-mail address: CMunro1992@aol.com |

On Saturday, January 27, 2001 at 03:20:34 a tribute was placed here to Honor SM1 Reed
Paul, I miss you so much, if I only had one day or one week to retrace our time together in Yokosuka, on board Mansfield! I love and miss you so much. Brother duty on her was the best time together. You taught me the ropes, looked out for me, now all I have are my memories of us and the places we went together and times spent hitchhiking home on leave together, getting caught up on family news via flashing light as we on two ships passed in the night. You were always leaving me, but this is one trip that has to wait awhile before I can join you. My heart is heavy and it hurts but they tell me vets are not supposed to cry. I miss you my brother... fair winds and following seas on your journey. One day I will meet you in Val Halla. Until then I carry you in my heart. I love you. by Rick Felty from Tacoma Washington, E-mail address: feltyrick@hotmail.com |

On Thursday, January 25, 2001 at 12:45:31 a tribute was placed here to Honor SPC RICHARD OLIVER
I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky for 3 years. Upon arriving at HSB 1/320th FA, i met a guy named Oliver. He was the nicest person i think i've ever met, the guy never cussed, and never fought or got mad at anyone. He was a great guy. We had a field exercise, and during it, he was bit by a Tick, he came down with a disease that no body could figure out how to cure, and in about 2 weeks, he passed away. Richard, i spent my 20th birthday at your memorial service, lil buddy, you will NEVER be forgotten I am proud to have served with a person like you. I know we weren't the best of friends, but you helped me out with quite a few problems. Thank you GUN'S OF GLORY, Air Assault chris by SPC CHRIS RODWAY from Troy, MI, E-mail address: wku2004chris@aol.com |

On Thursday, January 25, 2001 at 12:33:50 a tribute was placed here to Honor JAMES ALAN BARNES, 101st Airborne Division (AMBL)
I am a 21 year old college sophmore @ Western Ky Univ. My father told me numerous stories of his cousin, while i was growing up. I graduated from high school in 1997, and shortly there after, i enlisted in the U.S. Army. While making decisions, i decided to join up with the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT). I joined that unit because of a man that i have only heard stories of. I dedicated my 3 short years of service to JAMES ALAN BARNES. when i was in the field, and i was having it rough, i thought about how rough he had it. He helped me to make it through a pretty rough 3 year tour, i realize that i didn't make the sacrifice that he did for this great nation, but i was ready to. I now serve in the Ky Nat'l Guard. I just wanted to say this. THANK YOU and thank you to all of my fellow SOLDIERS, SAILORS, AIRMEN, and MARINES Chris Rodway AIR ASSAULT........HUUUHHHHHHHH by Chris Rodway from Troy, MI, E-mail address: wku2004chris@aol.com |
