... A Tribute to Coalition Forces of Operation Iraqi Freedom

red rose of remembrance.

"My fellow citizens, at this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger. On my orders, coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war." With these words from the Oval Office at 10:15 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, March 19, 2003, President George W. Bush announced to America and the world Operation Iraqi Freedom.

By the end of the day, Monday, April 14, 2003, coalition forces had taken control of Tikrit, the last major Iraqi holdout and the hometown of the deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. Maj. Gen. Stanley McChrystal said at a Pentagon briefing, "I would anticipate that the major combat engagements are over," yet reminded us forces will still be in harm's way in smaller fights. The U.S. Navy also announced plans to reduce their presence in the area.

"... My fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended," said President Bush at 9 p.m. Eastern Daylight time, Thursday, May 1, 2003 in an address from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, homeward bound after a ten month deployment in both Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. As he thanked those sailors in his presence, he was "mindful, as well, that some good men and women are not making the journey home."

Whether or not you agree with the political decision to pursue miltary action, we ask that you join us in honoring and supporting all men and women of the coalition forces who fought in Iraq Freedom and continue to work in the rebuilding of a free, democratic Iraq. We extend our prayers and sympathies to the families of all whom we honor below and the 4,391 coalition troop deaths [including 4,079 Americans] in the war. We also remember 30,112+ U.S. troops who have been wounded. Please support our troops.

We are mindful of the thousands who continue to be engaged in the dangerous actions of securing and reconstructing Iraq, but are closing the entries in this tribute to coincide with President Bush's address. Their contributions and sacrifices are as valuable as each and every name listed on this page. As always you are welcome to honor any veteran in our Book of Remembrance.

While some of these supplications appear to have been answered, please continue to pray for people of Iraq, coalition forces still there, and all human relief workers aiding Iraqis.

Please pray
  • for wisdom for our leaders;
  • for a swift, just end to the war;
  • for human rights and dignity for all peoples of Iraq;
  • for healing and comfort of all injured;
  • for those missing in action;
  • for those being held captive;
  • for a peaceful rest to all who have paid the ultimate price.

Our Sources of Information

After the notification of next of kin, names and status of American forces are released by the U.S. Department of Defense. Names were then entered on this site.

The British Ministry of Defence maintained an excellent detailed list of casualties, many with links to pages about the individuals. This information was used to reference these casualties

Information on coalition forces may have been gleaned from various news outlets. Most notably CNN.

CNN continues to maintain an alphabetical listing of casualties which contains all coalition countries. As of May 23, 2008 they report "there have been 4,391 coalition troop deaths in the war [including 4,079 Americans]. . . . At least 30,112 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. "
